The Systematic Undoing of Society: War Damage and Loss in the Social Sector of Tigray
The Commission of Inquiry on Tigray Genocide (CITG) has published an extensive report describing the widespread destruction in Tigray’s social sector caused by the war that started in November 2020. The assessment, carried out across six zones and all accessible woredas/districts, estimates the total damage and losses at around USD 10.86 billion, with the education sector being the most impacted.
This report provides one of the most detailed accounts to date of the scale, nature, and impact of the destruction, as well as the broader socio-economic effects of the war, blockade, and siege on Tigray’s social systems. The findings highlight the urgent need for coordinated recovery efforts involving government agencies, communities, and development partners, emphasizing the importance of substantial investment and capacity-building to restore services and foster long-term resilience.
